Course Outline​
Day 01: Introduction to Innovation and Creativity (1.5 hours) 

Duration: 1.5 hours

Objectives:

  • Understand what innovation means.
  • Learn about different forms of creativity.

Activities:

  • Icebreaker Game: Creative storytelling (build a story from random objects).

Lecture:

  • What is innovation?
  • Why do we need new ideas and inventions?
  • Activity: Group discussion: “What would you invent to solve a common problem?”
  • Homework: Find an example of something that was invented by young people.
 
Day 02: What Makes a Good Idea? (1.5 hours)
Duration: 1.5 hours Objectives:
  • Learn how to identify problems worth solving.
  • Understand the difference between a good and bad idea.
Activities:
  • Lecture:
  • Introduction to problem-solving.
  • What makes an idea useful?
  • Activity:
  • Group brainstorm: “Problems in our school/community.”
  • Game: Idea rating—students vote on the best ideas from the brainstorm.
Day 03: Turning Ideas Into Solutions (1.5 hours)
Duration: 1.5 hours
  • Objectives:
  • Understand how to take an idea and turn it into a solution.
  • Activities:
  • Lecture:
  • Steps to turn an idea into a solution (ideation process).
  • Examples of young innovators who turned their ideas into real products.
  • Activity:
  • Group exercise: Each group takes one problem from Day 2 and begins thinking of a solution.
  • Discussion:
  • How does creativity help us come up with solutions?
Day 04: Introduction to Entrepreneurship (1.5 hours)
Duration: 1.5 hours Objectives:
  • Understand what entrepreneurship means.
  • Learn the basics of how businesses work.
  • Activities:
  • Lecture:
  • What is an entrepreneur?
  • What does it mean to run a business?
  • Activity:
  • Group discussion: What kinds of businesses do students see around them?
  • Role-play: Start a lemonade stand—what do we need to run a small business?
  • Homework: Draw a business idea that could solve a problem from Day 2.
Day 05: Designing Your First Product (1.5 hours)
Duration: 1.5 hours Objectives:
  • Learn about product design.
  • Activities:
  • Lecture:
  • Introduction to product design—what makes a product work?
  • Simple design thinking process: empathize, define, ideate, prototype, test.
  • Activity:
  • Each group starts designing a product based on their solution.
  • Game: Sketch the design—students sketch and share product designs with the class.
Day 06: Prototyping and Testing (1.5 hours)
Duration: 1.5 hours Objectives:
  • Learn how to build simple prototypes.
  • Understand the importance of testing ideas.
  • Activities:
  • Lecture:
  • What is a prototype?
  • Why is it important to test ideas?
  • Activity:
  • Groups create simple prototypes (using art supplies, clay, or basic craft materials).
  • Game: Prototype showcase—each group presents and tests their prototype.
Day 07: Marketing Your Idea (1.5 hours)
Duration: 1.5 hours Objectives:
  • Learn how to present and sell ideas.
  • Activities:
  • Lecture:
  • Basics of marketing: How do you make people excited about your product?
  • Activity:
  • Students create a simple advertisement or poster for their product.
  • Game: Marketing competition—students vote on the best advertisement.
Day 08: Creating a Simple Business Plan (1.5 hours)
Duration: 1.5 hours Objectives:
  • Learn the basics of how a business works.
  • Activities:
  • Lecture:
  • Simple business model: What do you need to run a business? (e.g., money, product, customers)
  • Activity:
  • Groups create a simple business plan for their product (guided by worksheets).
  • Each group discusses who their customers are, how much their product costs, and how they will sell it.
Day 09: Pitching Your Idea (1.5 hours)
Duration: 1.5 hours Objectives:
  • Learn how to present ideas confidently.
  • Activities:
  • Lecture:
  • Introduction to pitching ideas—how to speak clearly and confidently.
  • Activity:
  • Groups prepare a short presentation (2-3 minutes) about their product and business.
  • Practice: Pitching ideas to the class—groups practice giving feedback to each other.
Day 10: Final Presentation and Celebration (1.5 hours)
Duration: 1.5 hours Objectives:
  • Present the product ideas and celebrate the learning process.
  • Activities:
  • Final Pitch:
  • Each group presents their product and business idea in front of peers, teachers, and invited guests.
  • Feedback Session:
  • Constructive feedback from the audience.
  • Celebration:
  • Award certificates and small prizes for participation.
Extended Days (Optional)
  • Day 11: Deep dive into specific types of innovation (e.g., environmental, social).
  • Day 12: Field visit to a local business or innovation hub for practical exposure.
  • Day 13: Reflection day—students write about what they learned and how they can apply it.

Students requesting refunds must email their request to finance.it@gsdc.lk. Refunds are only available to those who have paid the full class fees; fees paid in installments are non-refundable. Refund eligibility is as follows:

Applicants who have not attended the course for more than one week during the first month are entitled to a 90% refund and enrollment cancellation.

Applicants who have attended the first month of the course and not attended for more than one week during the second month are entitled to a 70% refund and enrollment cancellation.

Applicants who have attended the first two months of the course and not attended for more than one week during the third month are entitled to a 50% refund and enrollment cancellation.

No refunds will be issued after three months from the start of the course. Additionally, the course fee is non-transferable under any circumstances.
