Course Description

This foundational course is designed to provide learners with essential English language skills tailored for the field of Information Technology (IT). Aimed at very junior learners with basic computer knowledge, the course focuses on developing vocabulary, comprehension and communication skills relevant to common IT contexts. By the end, participants will feel more confident in using English to describe, navigate and work within basic IT environments, preparing them for further technical studies or entry-level roles in the tech industry.

The “English for Information Technology” course is a 12-module program covering fundamental IT concepts and industry-specific language in English. Each module includes interactive exercises, real-life scenarios and vocabulary-building tasks to help learners understand and use English in IT settings effectively.

Module 1: Introduction to Information Technology

 
    • Overview of IT and its importance
    • Basic IT vocabulary (computer, monitor, keyboard, etc.)
    • Identifying basic IT equipment in English.
 
Module 2: Basic Computer Operations 
    • Turning on/off devices, starting programs
    • English for navigating desktops, using a mouse, and typing
    • Simple tasks: copy, paste, delete
 
Module 3: Working with Files and Folders 
    • Vocabulary: file, folder, save, open, close
    • Describing file management operations in English
    • Understanding common file types and extensions
 
Module 4: Introduction to the Internet and Web Browsing


 
    • Basic internet terms: browser, search, link, website
    • How to perform simple searches in English
    • Introduction to email terminology
 
Module 5: Email and Basic Communication Tools 
    • English for composing and replying to emails
    • Common terms: attachment, inbox, subject, recipient
    • Writing simple emails in English for IT support
 
Module 6: Common Software and Applications

 
    • Introduction to Microsoft Office and similar tools
    • Vocabulary for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
    • Describing basic functions in these applications
 
Module 7: Understanding Hardware and Software 
    • Differentiating between hardware and software
    • Vocabulary for common hardware components (CPU, RAM, hard drive)
    • Describing software functions in English
 
Module 8: Basic Networking Concepts

 
    • Introduction to networks, Wi-Fi and LAN/WAN
    • Vocabulary for network devices: router, modem, server
    • Simple explanations of how networks connect devices
 
Module 9: Cybersecurity Essentials

 
    • Basic vocabulary: password, virus, firewall, secure
    • Tips for creating secure passwords in English
    • Understanding simple cybersecurity practices
 
Module 10: Introduction to Troubleshooting

 
    • Common troubleshooting terms: restart, reset, error, update
    • Basic steps in solving tech issues in English
    • How to describe problems to IT support
 
Module 11: Customer Service in IT

 
    • Communicating with customers in IT settings
    • Basic language for handling questions and providing instructions
    • Practicing customer support dialogues
 
Module 12: Review and Practical Applications

 
    • Review of all modules
    • Practical tasks, role-play exercises, and IT-specific scenarios
    • Final assessment: Writing a simple IT report or email in English
 

This course is designed for beginners in IT who have very basic computer knowledge and wish to improve their English for tech-related studies or entry-level job opportunities in the field.

By the end of this course, learners will:

  • Understand and use common IT-related terminology.
  • Develop basic reading, writing, and speaking skills in English specific to the IT environment.
  • Gain confidence in describing technical processes and IT equipment.
  • Communicate more effectively in IT support, troubleshooting and common tech tasks.
  • Prepare for more advanced IT studies or entry-level positions in IT.
The delivery method for this certification is entirely online, requiring candidates to have access to a personal computer.
