In 2019, Japan opened new employment pathways for foreign nationals under the leadership of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Recognizing this opportunity, Sri Lanka identified the need for a dedicated institution to develop globally competitive professionals with Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) qualifications, Japanese language proficiency, strong work ethics, cultural understanding, and essential soft skills for employment in Japan, while also preparing skilled professionals for the global Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence workforce.
Under the guidance of Professor Ashu Marasinghe, an alumnus and former professor of the Nagaoka University of Technology in Japan, the Global Skills Development Campus (GSDC) and Global Skills Agency (GSA) were established to deliver high-quality workforce development for both Japan and the global market.
